April is Literary Month at The Longfellow, and it arrives with a certain poetry to it. It brings longer days, softened light, and a renewed sense of curiosity. In honor of National Poetry Month, we’re embracing the spirit of the written word in all its forms. At The Longfellow, that means expanding beyond poetry to celebrate literature as a whole; stories that transport, essays that provoke, and pages that invite you to slow down and stay awhile.
Portland has long been a place where language and landscape intertwine. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of America’s most beloved poets, was born here, and his connection to Maine still lingers in the rhythm of the city. From the working waterfront that has inspired generations of writers to the quiet corners of the Eastern Promenade, there’s a natural invitation to read, reflect, and write. Today, that literary spirit feels more alive than ever. Independent bookshops line our streets, local authors shape the cultural conversation, and there’s a quiet understanding that a good book pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee or a view of the sea. Whether you find yourself tucked into a café, perched by a lighthouse, or settled into a comfortable chair in our lobby, Portland offers no shortage of places to spend a day with a story.
Throughout the month, we’ll be marking the occasion with thoughtful touches designed to surprise and delight, small invitations to pause, pick up a book, and indulge in a quieter moment. We’re also gathering for a special evening that brings literature to life in a more social way.
Sips & Stories — April 16, 6–9pm
Sips & Stories pairs two of life’s simplest pleasures: good books and great drinks. Join us as we welcome The Lucky Fox Bookshop and Grump & Sunshine for a cozy literary pop-up inside Five of Clubs. Browse a thoughtfully curated selection of titles, enjoy something special from the bar, and linger a while in good company. Attendance is free and open to the public; we’ll save you a seat.
