Our Story

Our Story

Inspired by history. Intentional about service.

The Longfellow not only echoes Portland’s proud independent spirit, we embody it: As one of the few hotels in the city that is unaffiliated with a large corporate chain, we uniquely match the vibe of the city.

Focused On Wellness

Our values and culture center around intention and wellness. Longfellow wrote of living in the moment and being present, and we wanted to create a wellness-themed hotel inspired by those same ideas. Here, we care for ourselves, our guests, and our community. We are kind, respectful, and inclusive. We infuse consideration and well-being into every stay—from the healthful food at Twinflower Café to a vast array of thoughtful touches such as alarm clocks featuring calming meditations, and tailored treatments at Astraea, our wellness spa. Ultimately, our mission is for guests to depart feeling even better than when they arrived.

Our highly personal service meets not only your needs, but your desires. And we deliver individualized offerings that all serve a purpose—from relaxation to revelry, exploration to contemplation—allowing you to honor your own intentions.

Welcoming, Refined Design

Residential-style design from the award-winning Post Company enhances the welcoming nature of our setting, with interiors that feel familiar yet impart a true sense of place. Drawing upon the sensibilities that have earned the firm prestigious honors from Architectural Digest, Architizer, Hospitality Design, and Wallpaper*, the firm infused The Longfellow with a refined minimalism and material touches that nod to Maine’s distinctive environment—deftly reflecting the rugged elements of Portland while creating a restorative place of respite.

Driven To Deliver Exceptional Hospitality

The Longfellow’s intentional approach begins with developer and owner Uncommon Hospitality, a family-owned firm that is invested in the success and growth of Maine—and in the people of the state, community, and company. Led by brothers Tony and Nate DeLois, Uncommon Hospitality is driven by helping guests to discover things they won’t find anywhere else, so they can create memories that remain long after departure.

At both Uncommon Hospitality and The Longfellow, we forge deep connections in the community, take inspiration from each destination’s history and culture, and follow an intentional approach to deliver exceptional hospitality that provides a sense of energy and discovery—filling every stay, and every day, with opportunities to thrive.
